Traveller's Tips

Everything you need to know to prepare your visit to Rabat

Best Time to Visit

March to May and September to November. Ideal climate — warm but not scorching, perfect for exploring on foot.

Language

Moroccan Arabic (darija) and French are widely spoken. English is understood in most tourist areas and hotels.

Currency

Moroccan Dirham (MAD). 1 EUR ≈ 11 MAD. Bank cards are accepted in most restaurants and hotels. ATMs are widely available.

Getting Around

Blue petit taxis are cheap and plentiful. Negotiate the fare before boarding, or use the Careem / InDriver app for fixed prices.

Dress Code

Dress modestly when visiting mosques and the medina. Light, breathable fabrics are ideal. Women may wish to carry a scarf for religious sites.

Respect Local Culture

Greet with 'Salam' and respect prayer times. Avoid public displays of affection. Always ask permission before photographing people.

Internet & SIM Card

Local SIM cards from Maroc Telecom or Orange are cheap with excellent 4G coverage. Buy one at the airport or any phone shop with your passport.

Meal Times

Lunch is the main meal, typically between 1–3 pm. Dinner starts late, around 8–10 pm. Many restaurants serve traditional Moroccan dishes with fresh seasonal ingredients.

Bargaining in Souks

Bargaining is expected in the medina souks. Start at half the asking price and negotiate with a smile. Never feel pressured — it's part of the authentic experience.

Day Trips

Rabat is perfectly located for day trips: Casablanca (45 min by train), Fès (2h), Chefchaouen (3h by bus) and the beaches of Temara are all within easy reach.

Health & Safety

Rabat is generally safe. Drink bottled water. Pharmacies are well-stocked and easy to find. European health cards are not valid — travel insurance is strongly recommended.

Best Photo Spots

The Hassan Tower at sunrise, the Kasbah's blue gates at golden hour, the Bouregreg riverfront at dusk, and the colourful Medina alleyways offer unforgettable shots.
